In Israel 
 
Many European Jews immigrated to israel during the Second Aliyah had an Orthodox background.  With a vision of a 'New Jew', they saw Judaism as a vehicle for creating a new kind of community which could make their world a more just place and encourage Jews to own their hertiage and their destiny.
 
 
A.D. Gordon
 
Gordon was born in 1856 to a religious family in Russia. He made aliya, moving to Petach Tikva and then Kibbutz Degania at the age of 47, having worked as a manager most of his life. He wrote about the relationship of Jewish people to the land and the impact that working the land would have on the Jewish nation's spiritual growth. Gordon doed in 1922.
 
 
Reconstructionism
 
The Reconstructionist movement is based in America, believing that Judaism is constantly evolving and that though Halachic laws are not binding, they form a valuable part of Jewish culture that should be kept unless there is a strong argument against them.  Reconstructionism emphasises community decision-making and celebrating Jewish customs.
